Blanche, a memoir.

Blanche, the previous moniker for White Sun Wit.

In all honesty, I used to dislike wheat beers: heffes, wits, etc.  Sure, in my early days of drinking I enjoyed a Blue Moon or a Hoegaarten but those days were squarely behind me.  I did the IPA thing, the big Belgian thing and am now firmly entrenched in sour territory.

On May 12, 2011, I was riding my bike home from Weyerbacher and had planned a particularly hilly route.  In the back of my helmeted head I was replaying a conversation I’d had with Dan Weirback earlier that day.  I was dwelling on Dan saying (with some disappointment), “Really? You still don’t like Blanche?  Put down the IPA and have a Blanche instead—do it right after your workout,” he suggested (Note: Blanche is now known as White Sun Wit).

I always knew it was a great ‘gateway’ beer for visitors to the brewery tasting room but I never found a place for it on my palate. Perhaps I was frequently distracted by the keg of Hops Infusion which was always available at my house?

As soon as I got home, I saw the 6 pack of Blanche sitting there: room temp, leftover from some event I’d recently done.  Not willing to give it a fair shot by having the ‘ideal’ temperature, I grabbed one, poured it in a tumbler and drank it.  Oops—It was amazing.  Dan was right!  [one cannot imagine how hard it was to admit that].   I had three of them right then and there.  The windows were open, the breeze was drifting through the house and right then and there my beer life took a serious detour to previously ignored territory.  When my sixtel of Hops Infusion kicked…  I replaced it with Blanche… and grabbed another keg of Hops Infusion as soon as my second keg kicked.  :^)

White Sun Wit, the Belgian-style Wit formerly known as Blanche, is available in stores now and is the perfect go-to summer beer.  It’s brewed with coriander, star anise, grains of paradise as well as orange peel so there is no need to throw fruit (however we won’t stop you).  Be sure to grab some White Sun Wit before it’s gone until next year!

The NEW Brewers’ Select Series has begun!

AQUILA
12 oz bottles & freshly-filled growlers
available exclusively at the Visitors Center!

Aquila is a light-bodied Belgian Farmhouse-style ale with heavy American aroma.  Pale, Toasted Wheat and Rye malts are combined with Bravo and Simcoe hops to yield this 7.1% Farmhouse ale!  As with all of our Brewers’ Select beers, Aquila will have extremely limited production. Draft will be available at select restaurants and bars. Aquila will debut at Philly Beer Week starting Friday, May 31st. 12 oz bottles and growlers will be available the same day exclusively at the Visitors Center!

ANDROMEDA
12 oz bottles & freshly-filled growlers
available exclusively at the Visitors Center!

Andromeda is an amber ale with a pronounced and complex malt profile (notes of coffee, bread and roasted grains) at 4.7% ABV with 27 IBU. As with all of our Brewers’ Select beers, Andromeda will have extremely limited production. Draft will be available at select restaurants and bars.  12oz bottles are available exclusively at the Visitors Center!

Heresy is available now!

This incredibly intriguing ale is made by aging our Old Heathen Imperial Stout in oak barrels that were used for making fine Kentucky bourbon! The result is an extraordinary, dark, and mysterious stout whose very essence has been enhanced. The aroma is filled with vanilla, cocoa, and roasted coffee beans.   Packaged in 12 oz bottles and on the shelves in a 4 pack, this is one amazing beer!  Be sure to grab a few of these for those late night campfires!

White Sun Wit is here!

The very last of White Sun Wit is here and available now – get it before it is gone for the season!  White Sun Wit (4.6% ABV) is a crisp and hazy Belgian-Style Wit.  White Sun Wit is Weyerbacher’s thirst-quenching spring and early summer ale.  The nose has a light spiciness from the coriander, orange peel, grains of paradise, and star anise.  The palate reveals a mild, refreshing and effervescent wheat beer that finishes with just a hint of tartness.

Note: White Sun Wit was formerly known as Blanche.  The recipe is absolutely identical, this was simply a name change.  You can read about Blanche and all of its comments in the Retired Beers Directory.

Special!

Visitors Center exclusive – limited run
